The Packers have yet to win a game, and have had some ugly performances, most notably by backup quarterback Graham Harrell. However Aaron Rodgers is not worried.
“I think there’s absolutely nothing to worry about as far as him, his development, his readiness in case something happens to me,†Rodgers said during a radio interview.
The biggest story of this game will not be the play at quarterback, but the play of running back Cedric Benson. Benson is ready to face his former team and dish out some punishment.
“It’s going to be fun, to say the least. It’ll be good just to go against that defense. I’ve seen all those guys coming in, I’ve seen them work together, so it’ll be fun to put a licking on them,” Benson told reporters this week via the Cincinnati Enquirer.
Benson will get some playing time in place of running back James Stark who is suffering from a turf toe. The Packers are also in a transition to a one-back offense, so the depth at running back will not be a concern.
This year, the Packers have used the no-huddle daily and the drafting of Alex Green and the addition of Benson have spoken volumes about the direction the run game is taking. This will force Benson to run out of the shotgun on a regular basis, which has been a problem in the past. According to STATS, Benson carried out of the shotgun just 28 times in three seasons, gaining 89 yards, an unimpressive average of 3.1 yards per carry. The Packers will be adjusting on offense, and have plenty of question marks on defense.
The defensive backfield for the Packers is unsettled and plenty of players will be fighting for the few open spots. Morgan Burnett will start at one safety spot and Charles Woodson will play alongside him, at least when the base defense is on the field. Tramon Williams is their top perimeter cornerback. That leaves holes that need to be filled.
The Bengals have plenty of question marks, but have looked much better in the preseason than the Packers. The Bengals are undefeated and quarterback Andy Dalton and wide out AJ Green are already in sync.
The Bengals have a long list of injured players that will be out for this game, but Marvin Lewis knows how to get the best out of his team.[poll id=”28″]
So there is only one question that remains; how can anyone bet on the Packers in this game? The team is banged up and will be playing with missing or banged up starters. The Packers have eight giveaways in their first two preseason games and a backup quarterback that is struggling.
Coach Mike McCarthy made it clear that winning is not important. “I don’t look at it like that,” McCarthy said. “If you’d have asked me that question early in my career, I’d probably been a little more (stunned) than I am.
“It’s important for the team to grow. Your won-lost record doesn’t always tell you that.
They have a new offense that they are tooling with and will have Benson in the backfield who struggles out of the shotgun. The defense is working out spots in the secondary and the Bengals should win this game on the field.
Take the home underdog and the points, in a game that should not be close.
