Avoid the Trendy Dog

One of the trendiest underdogs for the first round of the big dance is the Middle Tennessee State Blue Raiders who will take on the Minnesota Golden Gophers. Since we already covered this game in depth with a preview and a pick, we are going to look at another trendy underdog that has some bite in the first round.

Avoid NC Wilmington

NC Wilmington takes on Virginia in the first round and the public is picking NC Wilmington in the brackets and at the betting window. In fact over 61% of the bets coming in on this game are on NC Wilmington. This public support caused the point spread to drop from (-9) to (-7). This makes NC Wilmington a very trendy underdog that should be avoided.

First Round Underdogs with Bite

Now that we gave you a dog to avoid, let’s give you a few that will bite.

Northwestern (+1) over Vanderbilt

Northwestern is one of the best Cinderella stories of the tournament and they are not one and done. They had the Big Ten’s second-best scoring defense and held teams to 39.8 percent shooting. The Wildcats are 6-1 ATS and they are a dog that can bite.

Dayton (+7) over Wichita State

Wichita State is not only being touted as a good pick in the first round but many are expecting them to play well against Kentucky in the second round. Dayton has plenty of experience with four seniors and that will be a big plus in the tourney. They can run the ball and make free throws and that makes them a dangerous underdog in the first round.
