Taking the Top teams

It only seems natural that the No. 1 seed would be a popular pick as a favorite. After all they have never lost (128-0) but when it comes to taking the top seed against the spread (ATS) that is a different story. In the last four years the 1 seed is just 6-10 ATS unless the line is below 20. No. 1 seeds are 14-5 ATS against 16 seeds when the line is 19.5 or lower, including 7-1 over the past 10 seasons. Villanova, North Carolina and Gonzaga are all greater than 20 point favorites so beware on betting on them in the first round.

Chalk that will Cruise

Virginia (-7) over NC-Wilmington

Not only is NC Wilmington a trendy underdog, they are a No. 12 seed which makes them a popular pick. Don’t fall for it. The Cavs are great at defense as they allow just 55.6 points per game and have some impressive wins against the best teams in the country. The Cavaliers are 16-7 ATS in their last 23 games following a straight up loss and will easily cover and advance.

Don’t Believe the Hype

Creighton (-1) over Rhode Island

Another popular underdog pick is Rhode Island over the Creighton BlueJays, but don’t believe the hype. The BlueJays are one of the best offensive teams in the country. They can hit from all over the floor and they have multiple players that can stroke the 3. They also play a press that will give Rhode Island problems. The Bluejays are 14-5 ATS in their last 19 non-conference games and they get the win in the first round.
