Northwestern at Purdue
The Wildcats QB Clayton Thorson has looked great in recovery from ACL surgery. He looked so good the line moved two points in favor of Northwestern. However defense wins ballgames and the best defense in this game belongs to Purdue. The Boilermakers are 4-1 against the spread (ATS) in the last five home games.
College football week 1 picks against the spread: Purdue (-1.5)
Syracuse at Western Michigan
The problem with betting on college football is that many novice bettors will bet on a team just because of the name. This is the case with Syracuse. Don’t look for much defense in this game as both defenses do not have much talent. Broncos head man Tim Lester will want to take down his former team and flex his smarts on offense. The Broncos are 9-3 ATS in the last 12 non-conference games. Take the home dog and look for the upset.
College football week 1 picks against the spread: Western Michigan (+5.5)
West Virginia at Tennessee
One of the better games opens in Charlotte when West Virginia and Tennessee take to the field. The Vols return 11 starters and will have experience and be healthy, which is something that did not happen last season. With Wil Grier back under center, the Mountaineers will once again have an explosive offense. The problem is they only have five players back on defense. The Mountaineers are 3-13 ATS in their last 16 neutral site games. This point spread keeps moving up and the more it moves the more I like Tennessee.
College football week 1 picks against the spread: Tennessee +10
Virginia Tech vs Florida State
With the NFL one week away from starting, college football gets the stage on Monday night. The point spread in this game jumped the key number of 7 points. The Seminoles were (+6) and heading into the first week of college football they are now (+7.5) The Noles start the season under new coach Willie Taggart and have to try and put together a defense that returns just four starters. The Seminoles are 0-6-2 ATS in their last 8 conference games. They just won’t be ready for a Hokies team that brings back experience and talent on both sides of the ball.
