2013 NFL Week 6 Predictions: New York Giants vs. Chicago Bears

2013 NFL Week 6 Predictions: New York Giants vs. Chicago Bears

The Thursday night game between the New York Giants and the Chicago Bears is not as glamorous as it looked like it would have been at the start of the season. While the Bears are playing respectable football, the Giants have yet to win a game and they are a mess. The Giants have found a way to lose in every game by turning the ball over and not being able to establish the run. They are hoping to finally break into the win column with a win on Thursday night football.

New York Giants vs. Chicago Bears Odds

The Chicago Bears opened as touchdown favorites in this game and could be found as high as (-7.5) when it first opened. For as bad as the Giants start has been, they still attract some betting action from the betting public. Although the Bears are attracting most of the action (56 percent of the sports betting consensus) this line is starting to increase and it can be found as high as (9.5) at the top rated online sportsbook SportsBettingOnline.ag.

New York Giants vs. Chicago Bears Preview

The Giants seem like they are cursed this season. After the slow start by running back David Wilson, he finally managed to get into the end zone last week against Philadelphia. Shortly after the score, Wilson was injured and it has been announced that he will not play in this game.

New York Giants coach Tom Coughlin announced Tuesday that Wilson will miss the team’s tilt with the Chicago Bears on NFL Network’s “Thursday Night Football.” The Giants will rely on Brandon Jacobs and Da’Rel Scott to carry the rock against the Bears, two players that were once cut by the Giants and recently signed to fill the void.

Regardless of who is running the ball, the Giants need to improve on the offensive line. The offensive line has not blocked well, the backs are a step off, and the result has been an average of 56.8 yards. The Giants haven’t topped 100 yards as a team in a game yet, and their longest run from scrimmage was an 18-yarder by Wilson against Carolina in a 38-0 loss. Last season, they averaged 116.4.

The Giants biggest the problem is protecting the football. New York has turned it over 20 times through five games, the most by any team over the first five games of a season in the last 17 years.

On defense the Giants will have some new faces. Linebacker Jon Beason didn’t have a chance to play defense in Sunday’s game, since the Giants had acquired him in a trade with the Panthers just 48 hours before kickoff. But defensive coordinator Perry Fewell said Beason would definitely be a factor at the middle linebacker spot Thursday in Chicago.

The Giants have plenty of problems but so do the bears. While sounding positive, coach Marc Trestman said that tight end Martellus Bennett (knee), linebacker Lance Briggs (foot/hip), defensive tackle Stephen Paea (toe) and cornerback Charles Tillman (knee) all will have their status decided a few hours before kickoff Thursday. The Bears usually reliable defense is in trouble as well as they have given up 28 points a game which is not impressive after getting lit up by the Detroit Lions and the New Orleans Saints.

Julius Peppers has struggled in his 13th NFL season, with his slow start highlighted by the fact that the defensive line has been hit hard by injuries. He has failed to record any defensive statistics in two of his starts this year, the most recent coming last week against the New Orleans Saints. That leads us to a look at the betting trends.

New York Giants vs. Chicago Bears Trends

The recent football betting trends for this game show that the Bears could be in a vulnerable spot against the G-Men. The Giants are 7-3-2 against the spread (ATS) in their last 12 games following a double-digit loss at home and they are 4-1 ATS in the last five Thursday games, which means they prepare well on the short week.

The Bears are 1-4-1 ATS in their last 6 Thursday games, 1-4 ATS in their last 5 home games against a team with a losing road record and 0-4-1 ATS in their last 5 home games.

New York Giants vs. Chicago Bears Predictions

The Giants are not a very good team but with Beason on defense they should be able to improve and rattle Jay Cutler. The Giants offense can move the ball against a suspect Bears defense, but betting on them to not turnover the ball is always a risky proposition. In this case it is a risk that I am willing to take.

New York Giants vs. Chicago Bears Pick Against the Spread

The line in this game is inflated after the backers that believed in the Giants were disappointed when they played the Eagles. Now with the bandwagon getting empty it’s time to back the Giants in a prime time game.

Giants +9.5
